The Italian analogue wizard, Luca Ballerini, returns to us with his second offering on his own imprint, Musical Metaphor. It differs from his previous output on the label, veering away from the techno side of things while taking us down a more house route. “Stati Lucidi” begins with raw percussion and a bassline which has ‘Detroit’ written all over it, later evolving into something more melodic with its haunting yet powerful synths.

Fellow Italian Rio Padice, known by many for his deeper take on house, also lends a hand on this release by remixing the title track. He turns it into something almost unrecognisable from the original, bar a few elements, adding drum patterns which I can only describe as tribal. Then comes one of the funkiest bass guitar riffs I have heard in a long while, kept company by subtle chords and what sound like cricket samples in the background. It might look weird on paper, but Rio Padice makes it work perfectly.

My pick here has to be “Last in Classifica”, which takes us back towards the techno side of things with its familiar stabs and relentless hi-hats. All in all, a valuable purchase for any Italian underground house or techno lover out there.
